Bioaccumulation of mercury in some marine organisms from Lake Timsah and Bitter Lakes (Suez Canal, Egypt) OceanDocs

The present work is devoted to determine the level of total mercury in the different tissues of fish Mugil seheli, crab Portunus pelagicus, shrimp Metapenaeus stebbingi, and bivalves Paphia undulata and Gafrarium pectinatum collected from Lake Timsah and Bitter Lakes during spring 2003. In addition, factors affecting the accumulation of mercury in these organisms were studied. Levels of Hg in the edible parts of the investigated organisms showed the ranges 2.62 – 25.45 and 0.94 – 7.94 ng/g wet wt. in fish, 16.02 – 117.26 and 9.86 – 64.18 ng/g wet wt. in crab, 4.55 – 14.67 and 5.76 – 15.58 ng/g wet wt. in shrimp, and 1.06 – 36.31 and 5.38 – 69.59 ng/g wet wt. in bivalves from Lake Timsah and Bitter Lakes, respectively. Distribución del mercurio total en los tejidos de un delfín nariz de botella (Tursiops gephyreus Lahille, 1908) de la provincia de Buenos Aires (Argentina) OceanDocs

Samples of seventeen different tissues of one specimen of the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops gephyreus, caught accidentally in waters adjacent to Mar del Plata by local fishermen (38°00'S; 57°20'W), were analyzed for total mercury distribution. The analytical procedure employed for total mercury involved a wet acid digestion followed by flameless atomic absorption. The method was based essentially on the one proposed by Armstrong and Uthe (1971).

Fish and shellfish samples for total mercury analysis were provided by the local fish export industry. Data collected through the years 1981-83 are processed and information was obtained on actual total mercury values in edible muscle of sampled species. On the basis of these results, future trends in mercury concentration values are hoped to be predicted. The authors suggest a revision of standards in force at present and the proposal of new ones, taking into account species involved and size of specimens.

Etude des polluants chimiques (Cu, Fe, Zn, Cd et Hg) dans les moules (<Perna perna>) prélevées au niveau de la baie du Lévrier. OceanDocs

Ce travail a pour objectif de déterminer le niveau de contamination des produits halieutiques mauritaniens. Pour cela, nous avons étudié les polluants chimiques (Cu, Fe, Zn, Cd et Hg) dans des moules (<Perna perna>) prélevées au niveau de la baie du Lévrier en Mauritanie sur une période de quatre mois (novembre 1998 à février 1999). Sur les 400 échantillons analysés les moyennes de concentrations trouvées restent faibles par rapports à celles trouvées dans d'autres zones peu polluées (Amiard et al. 1986b). Ce qui n'est pas le cas du cadmium qui présente des valeurs plus élevées, phénomène fréquemment rencontré le long de la côte ouest africaine (Sidoumou et al. 1992).
